Course Description:
This course will develop leadership and public speaking skills through Model United Nations (Model UN) training. Model UN is styled after international summits, addressing global issues like climate change, gender equality, and global healthcare. While similar to traditional Debate in its emphasis on writing and presenting speeches, Model UN is more focused on collaboration and problem-solving, preparing kids for life skills, rather than simply “winning an argument.”
Throughout the year, students will continuously practice researching topics and delivering speeches according to the style of conferencing. More specific skills will depend on the semester.

Course Structure:
In the first semester, the course will be focused on the General Assembly (GA), the main style of Model UN. Students will learn about global affairs and the formal procedures of Model UN debates. In the last month, the students will prepare for the GA Semester Conference (the tentative date is the last class in December), which will be open to the public. Awards will be presented based on their performance, recognizing students’ growth and achievements.
The second semester will focus on Crisis debate, a fast-paced and innovative style of Model UN that emphasizes quick thinking and creativity. Students will be primarily trained in impromptu speaking and activities that encourage creative thinking. In the last month, the students will prepare for the Crisis Semester Conference (the tentative date is the last class in June), which will be open to the public. Awards will be presented based on their performance, recognizing students’ growth and achievements. A diploma will also be presented.

About the teacher:
Elaine has done Model UN for four years, winning multiple awards at Ivy League conferences: Harvard Model UN and Brown Model UN. She frequently attends local conferences, winning twelve awards (seven ‘Best Delegate’ awards). She has also acted as assistant chair in these local conferences. She is the head delegate and co-advisor of a local Model UN club.
